Secret Santa- The Promise to Protect by TheDragon-Empress Secret Santa- The Promise to Protect by TheDragon-Empress
Bec shivered, inching his way towards the house, sometimes risking a sprint when the coast seemed clear enough. Even though every part of him was screaming at him to run towards the house as fast as he could, the Trevenent forced himself to move slowly. Luckily, there were many trees nearby, so it wasn't too difficult for him, but all the same....

What the hell are you doing?! The voice screamed She's in THERE, not out here with you! Go!

He wanted to run and look, to see her with his own eye but....he knew what he would see. He could see it, smell it and feel  it all around; approaching death. And as much as he wanted to know that she was safe, for her to see him, even if she didn't know it was him, he didn't want to watch her life slip away.....

He had to. He knew he would, the moment he joined the PRT, the moment he started to sneak away on missions to check on his family- he knew that no matter what, in life or death, he would keep the promise he made. A promise he would not be able to keep, thanks to the circumstances.

If only she hadn't fallen gravely ill....If only it had happened a few years later.....She was only nine, even if she DID posses the genes, the amount of energy required for the transformation would drain her Life Force completely....

At last he reached, and Bec carefully reached out a hand to wipe away the frost gathered on the window pane, ignoring the pain in his claws. He peered inside, eye immediately falling on her, though her gaze was distant. Covered in a thin sheet, a lumpy pillow under her head, Jade looked dead already. If not for the slight movement of her chest, she might as well have been. Bec stood there, watching her and trying to stop himself from breaking down. Their mother was crying, and their father had his back towards the wundow, but Bec could make out the dead look in his eyes, the absolute stillness with which he sat there.

They waited.

So slow that it was barely noticeable, Jade's gaze moved to where Bec was. He saw his sister give the slightest of smiles, which remain frozen on her face as the final breath escaped her body. Bec and Jade's mother let out a choked sob, reaching forward to hold the young girl's hand. Bec turned away from the window, leaning against the wall. As his mother's wailing filled the air, the Trevenent clutched the scarf- a gift from Jade which was the only thing he had been allowed to keep with him- to his chest, squeezing his eye shut, but not before a tear slipped out.

No.....

He didn't even know where he was going, he just ran. Branches whipped against him, stinging the parts of him that were not covered in tree bark, but he kept running. Away from the pain, away from the sorrow, away from that broken promise....

...towards something.

It was faint, but....there was something. He could feel it. A force, pulling him towards itself.....

Bec didn't slow as he crashed through the trees, his lungs threatening to tear through his chest. Every part of him hurt, but he felt that pull. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn't stop moving towards-

There.

After all that....nothing.

No.....Was that....

Bec stretched out a trembling arm, brushing aside the snow from the stone.

......His grave. He could never bring himself to see it earlier, because it brought back memories of the accident, of dying and then waking up, and sometimes....he heard voices, and every time he tried to focus on them, it would just bring him to his grave. Now though, with the snow covering it, it looked beautiful. Peaceful, like it belonged there. Someone had left a small bit of wood there though, Bec wasn't sure why. As he bent to shift it aside, the wood moved. The Trevenant froze, backing away slowly and sinking into a defensive stance as a black aura surrounded the wood, coating it completely before plunging into the center. There was a splintering sound, and the strange thing floated up. It's eyes glowed red, and there was a limp wisp of ghost aura emerging from the top of it's head that seemed to hang in one of it's eyes. other than the wide log head, the creature was delicate- looking, but even Bec could sense the great amounts of energy the Phantump radiated. But there was something....

The two looked at each other for a moment, before the Phantump's face split in a grin. "I knew you'd be here!"

Bec stared at her, his eye widening. "J...Jade?...."

The smaller Ghost-Type nodded, floating towards him but losing her balance and crashing into his "stomach" instead. "I knew you'd be here!" Every time I came here to talk I knew you were listening, and I knew you'd come back for me! I knew you weren't dead!"

"But h-how are you-" he stopped. It didn't really matter how she was alive, and the power he could feel was in her was proof of how she stayed alive. That would have to wait. Bec hugged her tightly, unable to stop the tears from flowing again. Thought swam in his head, but he focused on the feeling of happiness coursing through him, warming his veins. It was only when Jade started to shiver that he wrapped his scarf around her, and started in the direction of the base.

The Headmaster would be furious, that was for sure, but it didn't matter. Nothing did anymore, except getting Jade to the warmth of the base. She was with him again, and this time, even death couldn't make him leave her.

Hot damn, Niv. The feels. The goddamn feels. The description even adds to the feels, seeing the emotional and physical pain Bec has to go through watching his sister die. Hot damn.

Keep doing this writing thing, man.
